U.S.–Houthi ceasefire (May 2025)
Parties: United States, Houthi movement (Ansarallah)
Mediators: Oman
An Oman-brokered bilateral ceasefire between the U.S. and Yemen's Houthis, pausing direct U.S.–Houthi hostilities and attacks on U.S. vessels in the Red Sea. The bilateral truce has largely held since May 2025, though it notably did not cover Houthi attacks on Israel or other shipping.
After months of escalating U.S. strikes on Houthi targets (intensifying from March 2025), Oman announced a ceasefire on May 6, 2025 between the United States and Yemen's Houthi movement (Ansarallah). Under the deal, neither side would target the other — including U.S. vessels transiting the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait — restoring some safety to a key shipping lane.
Crucially, the deal was narrowly bilateral. The Houthis stated publicly that attacks on Israel were "not in the ceasefire deal in any way", and the agreement did not cover Houthi attacks on non-U.S. commercial shipping. So this entry covers only the U.S.–Houthi theater; the broader Houthi Red Sea / Israel campaign is a separate entry.
Per the Congressional Research Service, the U.S.–Houthi bilateral truce has held since May 2025. That is why this entry is tagged holding. The classification is contested in some quarters — the Foundation for Defense of Democracies reported Houthi violations of the deal as early as July 2025 — but the more authoritative CRS assessment is that the bilateral truce itself has broadly held. Status as of July 2026; verify before relying on this for decisions.
- Neither side targets the other — U.S. forces nor Houthi forces
- Houthis halt attacks on U.S. vessels in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait
- Safe passage for U.S. shipping restored
The deal was narrowly bilateral (U.S.–Houthi only). It did NOT cover Houthi attacks on Israel, Israeli-linked shipping, or other commercial shipping — the Houthis stated this explicitly. No formal written text was published; terms were mediated by Oman.
